"Integrative Oncology can be defined as the rational, evidence-based combination of conventional therapy with complementary therapy with complementary interventions into an individualised therapeutic regimen that addresses the whole person living with and beyond cancer-body, mind and spirit."
Donald I. Abrams, MD Professor of Clinical Medicine University of California and Chief of Haematology- Oncology at San Francisco General Hospital.
About Dr. Kate James MBBS
Dr. Kate James qualified as a Medical Doctor in 2002 and after her early training began her career in Accident and Emergency Medicine . Her own families experiences of cancer and cancer treatment led her to change direction to work in the field of Palliative Care Medicine in 2010.
As her passion and belief grew in an Integrative Medical Approach she decided to dedicate all of her time and energy to practicing, researching and teaching Integrative Medicine. She runs clinics in Northumberland, supporting patients from all over the UK and sometimes abroad.
Instead of reaching for a prescription pad to issue drugs she advocates a different kind of approach; working on a number of levels with different tools to naturally strengthen and rebalance the body. She specialises in lovingly creating individualised holistic based programmes to support patients with cancer and other health conditions. These combine immunomodulants, natural compounds which help to optimise immunological function, with natural dietary therapy centred around chlorophyll rich/ high life force/ raw foods, in the context of a constitutional Chinese Five Element dietary therapy and Western Nutrition. Other supportive elements include EFT and techniques similar to journeying , abdominal breath work, Qi Gong and Yoga, Eastern Spirituality and philosophy.
“ The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease“
Thomas A Edison
Her work is underpinned by the concept that when we bring together, and encourage collaboration between, the teachings of conventional medicine, psychoneuroimmunology , Eastern medicine and various aspects of complimentary medicine we are much better placed to support patients in finding ways to empower themselves fulfilling the true definition of doctor, being derived from the latin doctoris which means 'to teach'.
“ The highest aspect of healing involves helping the patient to fulfil destiny.”

How will we work together?
After your initial enquiry by phone or email I am happy for us to speak to allow you to get a further feel for me and how I work. I know time is precious so I try to return calls as soon as I am able. Please do leave a message if I don't answer as I may be busy with a patient.
If you choose for us to work together we will arrange a 90 minute initial consultation. This can be done over the phone, Skype or FaceTime if you live quite some way away from Northumberland, or if working this way suits your needs the best.
During this appointment we will put together a first stage individualised holistic programme for you which I will email to you, together with a number of programme resources which I have written to help you understand how and why the suggestions I make can help you and further explain the evidence base/ associated concepts we discuss. This will also include my lovingly created recipes. Following an initial appointment some patients visit 4-6 weeks later for a two day appointment. This allows us to develop your programme to embrace many more integrative aspects and gives us time together to give you much more intensive support.
After your appointments my assistant will give you everything you have chosen to take or arrange for it to be sent to your home address. I am happy to supply food supplements and juicers to all patients below the retail price.
We can schedule appointments, weekly, fortnightly or as and when you need them and for as long as you feel you need them. Most importantly, with brief questions, you will be able to contact me by phone or contact me if you need to between appointments for advice and support. At your request I will also write to your Oncologists and other Doctors to keep them informed of this aspect of your care.
More about your programme
“ Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.”
My programmes centre around the usage of immunomodulants , by definition natural compounds which help to optimise immunological function, and specialised dietary therapy . They can also include many other aspects and techniques such as EFT, journeying, abdominal breath work, Qi Gong, yoga, hot/cold shower regimes, hyperthermia, oxygen therapy and therapeutic baths. Programmes are very much individual and all about what you and I jointly feel to be workable and realistic for you. This is fundamental for success. We will work together to allow you to make informed choices about other therapies which might further support your journey like Traditional Chinese or Japanese Acupuncture, Reflexology, Colonic Irrigation, and Herbal Medicine and I can often assist you in finding a local practitioner.
"I never work with a 'one size fits all' approach as each and every one of us experiences the same diagnosis differently depending on our individual constitution and personality. This concept is key in Eastern Medical teachings. Furthermore what is therapeutic for an individual at one time in their life is not at another. "
Dr. Kate James
In China and Japan certain herbal and mushrooms extracts, together with acupuncture are traditionally used for the support of individuals with various medical conditions including cancer. In both Japan and China specific extracts are licensed as adjuvant nutrition for cancer therapy.
The Chinese approach, Fu Zheng Pei Ben refers to supporting healthy Qi , ( traditionally defined as Life force or energy flow ), and optimising the body's innate natural resistance to disease. They recognise that immunomodulating mushrooms and herbs may help to support an individual constitutionally and support their immune system. Clinical research demonstrates certain immunomodulants may also help to support some of the side effects experienced during chemotherapy and radiotherapy and may have other benefits alongside allopathic treatment
In naturopathic medicine supporting the immune system is considered key to optimise the chance of sustained remission and rebalance the innate immune system .It is often postulated that one of the reasons that cancer returns is because the body and immune system has been weakened and exhausted by the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.
"He who is immune is immortal"

I typically suggest a combination of different supplements to help to support patients. These may include mushroom extracts, which contain naturally high levels of beta glucans , herbal extracts, edible algae/ cereal grasses , IP6 Gold , Royal Jelly and Bee pollens. We may also supplement certain vitamins and minerals including Vitamin D3, recognised for the key role it plays in immunological support. On other occasions I also suggest etheriums, other high life force tonic foods and essential oils.
"A review of the data available makes a strong case for using beta glucans in cancer treatment programmes. It would be rash to attempt to use beta glucans on their own, and we would not recommend this at all. However, the data indicate that it would be equally rash not to incorporate beta glucans into cancer management; thus upgrading from chemotherapy to immuno-chemotherapy."
Dr. Paul Clayton, Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine and a former Senior Scientific Advisor to the UK government's Committee on the Safety of Medicines
"Inositol and its derivative inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) markedly boost NK (natural killer) cell activity making the combination of IP6+Inositol an excellent adjuvant in cancer therapy."
Dr. Shamsuddin MD, PhD
Your dietary programme aims to optimise the functioning of the body on a physical, emotional and spiritual level, seen in Eastern Medicine as reflections of each other. My natural dietary approach work embraces aspects from many of the pioneers in cancer dietary therapy including Gerson, Budwig, Kushi and Whigmore. The main components of a typical programme will be an individualised dietary plan incorporating Chlorophyll rich foods like Wheatgrass and algae and / or green/vegetable juices.
" If I had one food to give a patient it would be wheatgrass"
Dr. Edward Brown MD
This will be balanced with warming cooked nourishing food and raw food as we work together with The Chinese Five Element Dietary System to support your individual constitution and condition. Working with an individual's constitution is key as it ensures maximal absorption and assimilation of our food and food supplements. This component of the programme is based around using wholefoods in particular grains like oats, rice, spelt, barley , seeds like flax and quinoa, beans, pulses and tofu, some fish and white meat, and lots of cruciferous vegetables, ( eg broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts and cabbage), root vegetables and berries. We will then choose a number of other foods with very special properties individually for you. These may include turmeric, citrus fruits, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, oils, and various herbal teas.
"I use food medicinally in a very dynamic way, always guided by a patient's own thoughts and feelings. For example I find some people need large amounts of chlorophyll rich green vegetable juice, whilst others thrive better on other types of juices. Some people benefit from large amounts of wheatgrass and algae to support them others need much less." Dr. Kate James
"Far from a 'bandage' approach like medicine applied to a wound, proper nutrition changes the course of disease at its source: tissue structure. No therapy or drug know to modern medical science can rebuild tissue that has been damaged by disease or trauma. Food alone can accomplish this feat. It is for this reason that nutrition is an indispensable weapon against disease."
Dr. Bernard Jensen MD
Emotional Freedom Technique
"By finally giving the energy- based environment its due, it provided for a grand convergence uniting the science and practice of allopathic medicine, complementary medicine, and the spiritual wisdom of ancient and modern faiths."
Dr. Bruce H Lipton, The Biology of Belief
During our time together we may intensively use Emotional Freedom Based Techniques similar to imagineering pioneered by Gwyneth Moss EFT Master, with whom I trained, and techniques similar to Journeying pioneered by Brandon Bays helping to facilitate your very own Healing Journey. EFT Tapping is one of the most powerful and helpful tools I've ever come across. I have found this part of the programme to support the natural dietary therapy and conventional treatment tremendously.
In particular EFT gives people opportunities to experience their illness in a different way, often seeing it from a new perspective, and gaining a number of different insights. This may seem quite an abstract concept and perhaps difficult to comprehend but by the end of a patient's programme I often find it is very real.
"Imagination is more powerful than knowledge."
In cases where patients feel a strong connection between their emotions and their condition EFT can help to create a safe space where one can explore these emotions . EFT does this by allowing an environment where we can address life issues from a place of complete self acceptance and unconditional love for ourselves in that very moment.
" The most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the power of all true science."
......Most importantly of all I feel EFT may help us much more easily access our inner wisdom, inner guidance or intuition.
